Our grassroots environmental meeting was held last night in Winter Park. Thanks to everyone that came. We have our work cut out for us, both nationally and locally, and we’ll need a lot more concerned people to sign up for the task of protecting our earth and democracy. The bad news is not letting up. In fact, it’s getting more dire. One of the attendees reported that the League of Women Voters has now decided they will not support SB10, HB761, the Everglades Agricultural Area Reservoir, because of funding issues.
We’ve also discovered that Florida’s “must win” fracking ban bill is, for all intents and purposes, dead in the House and won’t be revived this year. Maryland was one of three states that just passed a no fracking bill, with a Republican governor, no less. With our fragile ecosystem, this should have been a no-brainer. We cannot put our aquifer at risk, which provides approximately 90% of our state’s drinking water, to provide profits to oil and energy companies. However, once again, and not surprisingly, big money triumphs. Without a concerted effort from the grassroots (you and I, friends, family, everyone that relies on clean water, air and food), the oligarchs/plutocrats/President-wannabes are laughing all the way to the bank (and possibly the White House) over our lack of coordinated action. We can’t roll over and let them win. Please contact a favorite organization that is resisting the roll back of environmental safeguards or contact here to get involved with a local group. We need all the brawn and brain power we can get for this fight. Are you in yet?
